Learning Outcomes
Reading/Writing I is a beginning class in grammar, reading, and writing.
Reading:
By the end of this class, you will be able to:
Use pre-reading activities to help you understand a reading.
Understand and use target vocabulary.
Scan for information such as names, dates and numbers.
Identify the topic and the main idea of a reading,
Demonstrate comprehension of the details of each paragraph: who, what, where, when, why and how.

Writing:
By the end of this class, you will be able to:
Write affirmative and negative sentences.
Write yes/no questions with short answers and wh- questions.
Use correct format: paper orientation, line spacing and margins.
Use legible handwriting with correct letter formation, line placement, and spacing.
Use capital letters at the beginning of each sentence and periods or question marks at the end of each sentence.
Use the following sentence patterns:
Subject +Be + Noun Complement
Subject + Be +Adjective Complement
Subject + Be +Adverb
Subject + Be + Prepositional Phrase
Subject + Be + Noun + Prepositional Phrase
Subject + Want/Need + Infinitive Phrase
Grammar:
By the end of this class, you will be able to understand and use:
The verb Be, the simple present tense and the present progressive tense.
There is/There are
It with time and weather.
Singular and plural nouns.
Subject and object pronouns and possessive adjectives.
Demonstrative adjectives after be and before nouns.
Adverbs of location and frequency.
Prepositions of time and place.
Attendance
Absences: You need to come to class every day.
Your teacher takes attendance every day at the beginning of class.
If you are not in class, your teacher will mark you as Absent.
If you are sick, stay home or go to a doctor, but you are still Absent.
There are NO EXCUSED ABSENCES.
Lateness: If you come to class after attendance, your teacher will mark you as Late.
If you are 15 minutes late, your teacher will mark you as Absent.
Three Late marks is the same as one Absent mark:
Late + Late + Late = Absent
Breaks: You need to be in the classroom for all of the class.
There are NO BREAKS. Take a break before class or after class.
If you need to use the bathroom, leave quietly and return quickly.
You should not leave class often or leave class for a long time.
If you do, your teacher may mark you Late or Absent.
Tests: If you are absent during a test or a quiz, your grade will be 55%.
There are NO MAKE-UP TESTS.
Grades You will receive grades for your work in class. Your teacher will use this grading scale:
Grading Scale:
Excellent: 100–93 = A, 92–90 = A-
Very Good: 89–88 = B+, 87–83 = B, 82–80 = B-
Good: 79–78 = C+, 77–73 = C, 72–70 = C-
Bad: 69–68 = D+, 67–63 = D, 62–60 = D-
Very Bad: 59–0 = F
Final Average:
At the end of the session, you will receive a final grade. Your teacher will average the grades together in this way:

Effort Score: You will also receive a score for effort. This will be a number:
1 = Exemplary Effort
2 = Satisfactory Effort
3 = Unsatisfactory Effort
A student with exemplary effort:
Comes to class every day and is never late.
Speaks only in English.
Does all homework and takes all tests on time.
Pays attention and participates in class.
Asks questions.
Does not leave the room during class time.
Does not use a cell phone in class.
Promotion When you finish this class, you may be promoted to Level II.
To go to Level II, you:
MUST NOT HAVE a final grade of C-, D or F.
MUST have a total final grade average of A, B, or C. The total average of your grades must be 73%–100%.
Retention If you do not pass Reading/Writing I, ELI will retain you. You will not go to Level II. You will have to take Reading/Writing I again.
