As it is necessary to have knowledge of the history and events that lead to the conflicts within Syria. Since they play a major role in the reasons of why people decide to stay or leave the country, we found it to be very important to tell the major events that let to the problems within Syria. To do so ,we have read different articles on the events that have occurred within Syria, focusing on the last twenty years. While we know that there have been more events taken place within that time frame that has effects Syria, we have focused on those that could have lead for individuals to question whether or not they would want to continue to live in the country. Additionally ,we read numerous documents and looked at timetables of the history of Syria.
Unfortunately, we were unable to interview as many people as we wished. However, to substitute first hand interviews, many documentaries and videos were watched to gain insight into the feelings and emotions of people still in Syria. Additionally, we read many articles about the life of IDP's, how Syria is functioning and operating now, and rationale for not leaving the country.
Once again, we watched many documentaries to understand the lives of refugees and the challenges that they face on their journeys to safety and in their respective communities. We also read information from refugee organizations, and many articles about the challenges that refugees are confronted by.
As stated, we were unable to interview as many people as we wished regarding the issue of Syrian Migration. However, to gather the information needed in getting insight of the perspectives of experts of the subject, we conducted a telephone interview with a woman who is a part of an organization called HIAS. HIAS is an organization in Pennslyvania that aims in welcoming and aiding refugees and immigrants seeking to escape conflict and deprivation in their countries of origin. The interviewee, Rona Butchalter, is the Director of Refugee Programming and Planning within the organization, making her a viable and extremely useful resource in gathering expert information on the subject (considering she works with not only Syrian refugees, such as what we are studying, but also other refugees from all around the world).
