I have been a faculty member at what is now the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Delaware since September 2003. I teach undergraduate courses in public policy and graduate courses in public administration and public budgeting and finance, including the Seoul Case Study Program. My main areas of scholarly specialization include public budgeting and finance and professional accountability; my Biden School faculty page is here, my Google Scholar page is here, and my CV is here. Before turning academic, I worked for the New York City School Construction Authority, the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation, and the Flatbush Development Corporation. I earned my PhD from what is now the School of Public Affairs and Administration at Rutgers University-Newark, MPA from what is now the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at the Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York, and BA from Swarthmore College.
I ask students in my capstone courses to write personal mission statements as a touchstone for the reflective exercise that culminates in their e-portfolios. One potential question we can ask ourselves when developing that kind of statements is, "How do I want to be remembered?" Personally, I have struggled with that one myself, for all of the many years I have assigned this task to my students. How do I want to be remembered, and how can I express that cogently? Finally, I have it, taken verbatim from the late University of Chicago Professor, Martin E. Marty: "That I was a good teacher." That seems like a good aspiration.
