Connecting Schools

Google Apps for Education

Students in History 316 and our community schools use the free tools provided by Google to collaboratively instruct, create, present, share and store our digital projects. We create a shared Google drive for the course each year and share the drive and contents with each student enrolled in the course and with the cooperating community school teachers. Students in the community schools use either iPads or Chromebooks and access to Google apps.

Project Idea Survey Form and Feedback

All students' ideas and opinions are important, so we ask they fill out a project idea Google Survey Form after our UD students present their Citizenship lesson on their first visit to the community schools. The form generates a spreadsheet with the names and ideas of the students. Our UD students provide positive feedback for each 4/8th grade student. On their second visit to the community school, our UD students meet with their groups and discuss the ideas and determine which project to pursue.

Technical Difficulties

One of our biggest technical issues of the digital poster project is making sure the 4/8th grade students' posters are shared outside their school district's Google Drive. Due to security and firewalls, students are not able to share outside the district. This year, with the assistance of Kevin Wright, the Appoquinimink School District Instructional Technology Coach, our students were given their own account in the district (after reading and signing acceptable use agreements for the State of Delaware and Appoquinimink School District.

It is extremely important to the success of these community school digital projects that you have technology assistance in the school. Thank you Mr. Wright!!
