Week 11 (4/26 - 5/2)
This week was full of guest speakers during class. We had Matthew Mauriello on Tuesday and Megan Boddum on Thursday
Guest speaker Megan Boddum
Matthew Mauriello walked us through an exercise that was a quick game design where we pitched ideas around one concept and saw how far we could run with it
Our phrase was domesticated animals, and I had one fantastic idea for it. I pitched my idea of a Nintendogs type game where you raised and took care of monsters, and it was clearly a good one because everyone in my group chose that pitch immediately.
Notes from Megan Boddum:
Trend Spotting and Ongoing Observations (Constant Voice of User)
Role as researcher is the always be picking up on trends
Cozmo Performs Feature
Over time specific play patterns began to be observed
Code Lab: coding game (Scratch) built into Cozmo
Cozmo Says: Choose the words Cozmo says
New features in Cozmo inspired by observations
Piano Concept
Another design concept made for kids based on the research they did thus far
Kids struggled with this one more than cozmo
Older adults designing things for kids need to take into account what kids do and don't know rather than design based on things they knew when they were kids
Code Design with Kids
Age-Up Initiative
They had to figure out how to retain kids in the youtube kids app and avoid them going to the main app too quickly and potentially see inappropriate content
Had to find ways to make engaging content for kids on the youtube kids app
Youtube kids design crew
Team built around making code design activities for kids
Kids picked were usually ones familiar with youtube kids frequent users of it
Kids wanted element of personalization and customization
Wanted to see themes of action and adventure
