I took an ENGL413 course at the University of Delaware during my senior year titled "Getting Things Done: Topics in Professional Writing" where I put my design skills and writing ability to the test. I created various projects and design prompts throughout the semester which will be displayed here. This course was an intensive journey into the world of writing, analyzing, and digital creation. It was an incredible class where I was able to really put my English major on display. The assignments were challenging and enticing, and I learned so many new skills such as how to create screencast videos, instructional pamphlets, an open letter to the public, flyers for public events, and more. I had very little digital experience beforehand, and this course opened me up to so many new applications such as ActivePresenter that allowed me to take my written and verbal skills and expand on them to create content for larger audiences. I remember being nervous before each assignment, thinking that I didn't have the appropriate skills needed for success in this class. I kept surprising myself at how well I was doing in each assignment as I kept raising the bar for myself. I started to get an eye for design, color, readability, and scannability in my work. My confidence grew, and here I am now with a gorgeous portfolio to share. In this portfolio are prompts I was given throughout the semester to showcase my reading, writing, and design skills. Along with those prompts are the three major assignments I was given in this class as well: ELI, user instructions, and a screencast video. I made sure to include what exactly my instructions were for each assignment. and I created different pages for easy access to make it as viewer-friendly as possible when looking over my work. I detailed everything each assignment taught me and what I gained from each one. This class was a lot of fun, but more importantly, it showed me that I still have so much to learn as a budding writer. It helped me realize that I really do enjoy design-oriented websites like Canva and that I truly have an eye for making engaging material for all audiences. It was a learning process and one that I will now take with me as I pursue bigger and more challenging things. I am so grateful to have taken a course that wanted to challenge me, enhance my already attractive skills, and force me to look at my own writing with critiques and room for improvement. After all, we can always learn more.
