T-Prep is meant for students to be familiarized with Jacob's School of Engineering, the IDEA Center, and UCSD's engineering resources. However, it is also here to familiarize you with your environment and the beautiful city of La Jolla and San Diego! In the spirit of a program made by students for students here are some awesome recs!
Sally T. WongAvery Library
We have a second library on campus! Many UCSD students are not aware or never end up checking out the school's second library. This is located on the Medical School side of campus and you can get too it by walking all the way down library walk. This is a very spacious library with good air-flow and study rooms available to book ahead of time!
This has its own hours so make sure you check them before heading over for a study session!
IDEA Center Expansion
Two words: Air Conditioner. The IDEA Center is one of the very few places on campus which has a constant air conditioner which makes it the best study spot on campus. Jokes aside, this is a small cozy study center located into the Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall basement, for students to study, Engineering Learning Community sections, and events.
This is going to open Fall 2025 so be on the lookout for the hours!
Israni Biomedical Research Facility
This is one of the most hidden gem spots on campus. It is located on the Medical School side of campus and has a beautiful layout. On the lobby there are tables and chairs with outlets in the middle with every floor having this setup as well. Apart from that, there are some conference rooms later in the day that open up which you can use to study.
Keep in mind that open hours to get into the building are from 8am-5pm and if you are inside after that time you can stay there to pull an all nighter! They don't mind having UCSD students study overnight as long as you clean up your mess if you make one!
The Taco Stand
Some really good Mexican food for all you Mexican food lovers. The food here is really good, but what highlights them the most is the sauces. Does not matter what you get, the sauces will change everything (try to take some home) but it is quite far so using the bus would probably be needed.
Selva Coffee House
Plants and Coffee what more can you ask for? The coffee here is mainly matcha so for all you matcha lovers this is a good spot. They tend to have a lot of floral drinks such as lavender, rose, etc. they put in their coffee which tastes really good!
Ramen Nagi
Known for their Black Ink Ramen, Ramen Nagi is one of the best choices on this list. It is located in UTC and is easily accessible through the on-campus trolley in Warren and takes about 10 minutes to get there. Expect the line to be long at night but worth the wait! They also are known for giving you a paper to fill out to fully customize your Ramen such as noodle thickness, broth, condiments, and toppings! The squid ink ramen and spicy miso are one of the best ramen in La Jolla.
Scoops La Jolla
HMMMM SOOOO YUMMYYYY!! They have a large variety of really good flavors and different kinds of derserts. The ice cream is really rich and creamy which honestly felt like the flavors were melting on my tongue. It so close to la jolla shores so you can go after a beach day or some food spots nearby.
LEILA
One of the most beautiful restaurants in San Diego! This is a Persian food restaurant where you dine under the stars. The ambience is beautiful and the food is extremely delicious if you like kebobs, hummus, and rice! This restaurant is a one of a kind and perfect to go out and explore the best San Diego has to offer. Small heads up, the food can get a little pricey its around the 20$ range per plate but its worth it!
La Jolla Cove
The cove is one of the most fun places to go in UCSD where you can snorkle, swim, and explore the cool shops nearby. There are a lot of seals laying on the sand so just make sure to let them be. The La Jolla Cave store is one of the coolest stores here as you pay a 10$ ticket (bring student ID if you have one for discount) to climb down a VERY long staircase to get into a cave.
Coronado Island
A small man-made island in San Diego accessible through driving or ferry! This is a little drive from UCSD but a very awesome trip to make and a fun little city to explore with funky shops.
