We Are accepting donations for the Grad Lounge!
Since the beginning of LGSC, at least, as far back as the saved documentation goes, students have been asking for a printer we can all use. Well, the wait is over. November 16th the GPSA approved our lounge improvement request for $410 to purchase this multi-function monochrome printer designed for small offices. In addition to that, the department has agreed to fund supplies needed up to $500 a quarter. This brand was chosen because it ranks the highest among printer companies in ethical ratings at an 89. Part of the ratings include environmental factors, animal welfare, human rights, and armaments, Brother receives highest ranks in all of these categories and most importantly do not invest or profit from war and acts of genocide.
We also chose this printer because it has a high print volume with one of the lowest costs for an XXL toner cartridge (appx. 12,000 pages per cartridge!). This translates into lower operational costs. This was critical considering we knew we were going to be asking the department to budget out supplies and by keeping ink low, we could make a positive impact in another area of use, the paper.
Considering the search for the printer was informed through ethical questions, we also wanted to approach the paper the same way. Therefore, as part of the budget request we sourced recycled printer paper to reduce the amount of virgin material used by our department. We hope this tradition continues and carries over year after year.
In order for us to get approval from the department for a budgetary line allocation (aka money) we needed to provide them with a proposed budget that they would then take to vote and either approve or reject. This was challenging because the department has made it known that our funding is low by offering less TA positions, bringing on smaller cohorts, and contrary to other summers, in 2024 grads were given $0 additional funds. Through an internal survey we were able to settle on about 200 pages as a fair amount of use. From this number we were able to build a budget and provide numbers to the department for approval. We are very pleased to announce that not only were we able to secure a printer, but a budget as well!
The following are some of the standards that we now call "fair use"
200 pages per student per quarter (includes TA's for department)
The door to the work room must remain closed unless occupied by a graduate student (grad lounge may stay open). If you leave and no one is in the room, you must close the door behind you.
To maximize efficiency and budget, you should always print double sided.
Whenever supplies are getting low or any warning lights come on, etc. you must let a LGSC rep know.
Treat the equipment with care, it is ours as a grad community.
You will not be able to call campus IT for any issues so again, please contact your LGSC rep.
