BET Surface Area Analyzer

Measuring nanoparticle surface area is important for understanding the behavior of different gases and aqueous solutions at nanoparticle surfaces. In the Grassian lab we use a Quantachrome Instruments Nova 4200e Surface Area & Pore Size Analyzer to determine surface area using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The BET, which takes its name from the three scientists who developed the theory, Stephen Brunauer, Paul Emmett, and Edward Teller, is a common method for measuring surface area. BET involves carefully monitoring pressure during the adsorption and desorption of nitrogen gas onto the sample surface at low temperatures. BET can be determined from the isotherms generated from these measurements.

Our lab regularly uses the Nova 4200e to collect multipoint BET for commercial and synthesized nanoparticles prior to conducting experiments.
