John Dombroski

(American, born 1989)

John Dombroski (https://johndombroski.net/) works with sound and light to create experimental music and site-specific installations. Using microphones and lenses, he creates interactive physical systems that connect and activate architecture and found objects, investigating the ways in which our audiovisual and cognitive systems produce sensory experience. By reorienting sonic and visual perspectives, Dombroski highlights the social and material histories embedded in our experience of the everyday. His work strives to sensitize every aspect of embodied experience, through looking and listening, to the poetics of the familiar.

As his site-specific thesis exhibition of sound installations tuned to human presence was made impossible by the COVID-19 pandemic, his written thesis outlines the exhibition as a score to be realized. He is currently working on a series of social distance works that parallel core trajectories from the thesis—reorienting perspectives on the overlooked aspects of home and everyday space that are now at the center of our lives, toward the significance of intimate listening and sincere experience in relation to site, place, and others.
