Empowering the Practice of Reflection for
Social Justice Teaching
Empowering the Practice of Reflection for Social Justice Teaching was specifically designed to promote Know Oneself and Know Your Students, 2 of the 4 quadrants of the Teaching for Social Justice framework that centers the work of Teaching and Learning Commons Engaged Teaching. Educators will learn about racism in higher education and at UC San Diego, reflect on their social identities, and how they inform their worldview and student success and barriers. By focusing on Know Oneself and Know Your Students, educators will be better prepared to address or enhance their understanding of the other 2 of the 4 quadrants of Teaching for Social Justice framework: Implicit Messages communicated through teaching methods and Explicit Messages communicated through course content. Taken together, educators take on a personal journey to learn about themselves and a professional journey toward contributing to a social justice teaching and learning.
Task: Review the learning outcomes.
Educators will be able to reflect on their intersecting identities with a focus on racial and ethnic identities.
Educators will be able to articulate how the identities they hold impact their teaching practices and their relationship with students.
Educators will be able to articulate why the framework for Teaching for Social Justice is critical to creating a classroom culture that welcomes and values the lived experiences of students, particularly those of students of color.
Empowering the Practice of Reflection for a Social Justice Teaching supports UC San Diego's DEI Course Requirements, UC San Diego's Principles of Community, UC San Diego's Strategic Plan (goal 2), and the core tenets of EDI Strategic Plan.
We're glad you're here.
