Enroll or Waive UC Health Insurance Requirements (UC SHIP)
What is UC SHIP?
Health insurance is a mandatory non-academic condition for enrollment at UC San Diego. To ensure that all students have adequate health care coverage, including ongoing primary and specialty care, and to satisfy the mandatory health insurance requirement, UCSD automatically enrolls all registered students into UC SHIP.
UC SHIP is a student-focused benefits package for UCSD graduate and undergraduate students, including strong medical, behavioral health, pharmacy, dental, and vision care benefits. UC SHIP is compliant with the Affordable Care Act requirements and works to complement your care at the Student Health Services right on campus. Enrollment is automatic for registered students; waiver application is also available.
How are you enrolled in UC SHIP?
Each quarter that you enroll in classes at UCSD, your student billing account is automatically charged the fee for UC SHIP, and this appears on your e-bill statement as a separate charge.
If you are already covered by another insurance plan and wish to opt out of UC SHIP and have the UC SHIP fee waived, you must apply for a Health Fee Waiver through TritonLink. DDPM students only need to submit one a fee waiver, at the start of the fall quarter.
Health Fee Waiver due by: September 14th, 2025
Read How to Waive UC SHIP for more information about the Health Fee Waiver process, including waiver deadlines & waiver criteria.
How much does UC SHIP cost?
Graduate and Professional students: $1,940.00 per quarter
The fee is charged to your student billing account along with other mandatory registration fees each quarter (Fall 2025, Winter 2026, and Spring 2026).
For more information, visit: https://shwadmin.ucsd.edu/uc-ship/index.html#whenSHIP
**If you need medical attention prior to the effective date of UC SHIP you will be responsible for the cost of any medical services incurred prior to the start of your student plan. Therefore, if you intend to arrive to the San Diego area before the effective date of UC SHIP it is highly recommended that you purchase your own personal health insurance that will cover you until the effective date of UC SHIP. Short term plans are offered by many different insurance companies. For more information we recommend you research those options to select the short term insurance plan that will meet your needs.

The University expects both faculty and students to honor the policy. For students, this means that all academic work will be done by the individual to whom it's assigned, without unauthorized aid of any kind.

The Principles of Community are vital to the success of the university and the wellbeing of its constituents. UCSD faculty, staff, and students are expected to practice these basic principles as individuals and in groups.
