While working with First 5 SCC, many of the families that they work with are low-income and many of them are primarily Spanish speaking. As their goal is to aid the children and families who are in the most need, it is important to consider the social context of Santa Cruz County itself, especially demographics.

The Health Equity Index is used to correlate socioeconomic status and poor health outcomes, which can tell us a lot about the social contexts. In order to understand the ramifications of the socio-economic barriers, it is important to note the differences in equitable health across geographic lines. As you can see from the map above, there is much greater need for interventions in the darker blue areas (South County), as they have a much higher index value.
