Establishing a visual framework that allows ACORN International to easily update chapters' ongoing advocacy efforts, creating a more unified online presence
Overcoming communication barriers between the partner organization and amongst team members
Pivoting from a traveling project to a digital one, which produced a more sustainable impact

To serve these needs, we used JS Storymap by Knightlab to create a comprehensive and central visualization of ACORN's information with biographies and links to every branch's website.
Morgan Bishop, Project Partner Liaison, Senior Sociology Major and Legal Studies Minor, Concentration in GISES
My time at UCSC, along with my involvement in the Everett Program, has helped me to realize and develop my passion for writing, research, and communication that I hope to utilize in my future careers.
I am passionate about non-traditional advocacy and services for unhoused populations. I also enjoy researching intersections between law and public opinion, and hope to have a career in human centered urban planning or nonprofit service. I am not quite sure what the future holds yet, but I am excited for it regardless.
Rachel Edelman, Technology and Design Lead, Senior Sociology Major, Concentration in GISES
Throughout my academic experience, I have always had a passion for social justice and advocating for human rights. This has translated into a passion for law and serving the community.
UCSC and the Everett Program have fueled my passions, and has given me an outlet to create sustainable social change that will have life long impacts on members of different communities around the globe.
I wish to go to law school to become a lawyer, so I can create change for people across the globe.
Tina Bullington, Logistics and Finance Coordinator, Senior Anthropology Major and GISES Minor
Throughout my years at UC Santa Cruz, I have grown passionate in looking at the ways in which to meld technology and anthropology together to give a platform for under-served communities. I am interested in working at the intersection of tech and people to uplift community-based solutions
I am grateful to end my undergraduate career with showcasing our Everett project. Over the course of the year, I have experienced immense growth from gaining confidence with learning new tech to learning in-depth project management skills. As I graduate, I am excited to continue tech for social good projects partnering with the Stop San Quentin Outbreak Coalition.
The Everett ACORN Team pivoted our project in April 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the following months, from April to September, the team consolidated every chapter's background information including chapter history, major achievements, photos, and COVID services and advocacy projects into a comprehensive and interactive story map. Through this work, we were able to centralize the organizations information to make it more accessible, contextual, and sharable for current and future organizers. Through this story map, we created a template for the organization to update with new information, so it will be used for years to come.
Using StorymapJS, the team created a story map which is featured on the 'Affiliates' page of ACORN's website. The story map centralizes information on all of the branches and chapters and geographically locates them to visualize the global impact that ACORN has. We stylized the map using HTML and CSS in consideration for color blind or dyslexic folx.
Through making the information more accessible and engaging, ACORN chapters will use their website as an effective platform for sharing their story, current campaigns and services.
To give the story map a diverse range of media to keep users engaged, we created an introductory Youtube video using Adobe Premiere and Animator (The animation is modeled to be the Chief Organizer!). This video introduces ACORN's mission, methods, and scope to draw users in and give them more information than they would have gotten from just the story map. The introductory video also serves users to gain a concise and comprehensive understanding of the history and current works of ACORN.
As our project pivoted away from video shooting and editing, we had to make due by learning new technologies that we could develop at a distance. We collectively learned how to use JS Storymap, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Animator, and HTML coding strategies. These proved difficult at times, as they were completely new to us, but by working together and utilizing our project guides, we were able to learn these technologies and put them to their best use.
Learning HTML coding was a substantial barrier to us, as the open source tool we used was riddled with bugs and difficult to input the code into at times. Though this was a substantial barrier, we were able to persevere through this to create a deliverable that our partner organization was happy with.
The COVID-19 pandemic rendered our original project plan of filming ACORN organizing and promotional videos impossible. As a team we were devastated that our previous 3 month's work of project preparation were unusable and only had three months to create a whole new project that attended to the main needs of ACORN.
With the help of our project guide, Molly, we learned of an open-source story mapping tool, Storymap JS, that sparked our new project idea of visualizing ACORN International's chapter network. Using the storymap, we were able to better meet the needs of ACORN and produced unintended impacts, such as inspiring ACORN's chief organizer to hire a communications director. Though COVID spread throughout the world, ACORN and our team used this time to work even harder instead of shutting down.
ACORN's community organizing strategies that have helped them gain a multitude of victories for their chapters was inspiring to us. We learned that solidarity and community action such as mass protest and occupation, spreading awareness by canvassing and door knocking, and striking have all been very effective for members of the organization. Through our centralization of ACORN's information, we learned how important it is for community organizations to have accessible online resources that they can all share and utilize.
Further, this project exemplified the digital divide between the Global North and South that has been perpetuated by imperialism and the monopolizing of resources. In this project, we aimed to provide an equalizer for all of the organization's worldwide chapters. Though we recognize that this project did not necessarily alleviate that barrier, we are thankful to have worked with an organization that is working on global communication and access to resources.
Wade Rathke, Chief Organizer of ACORN International
Sabine Frid-Bernards, Communications Director of ACORN International
"The story map dovetailed with our rebuilding our entire website so that it was more modern, functional, and useful to our members and the entire organization. The story map became the centerpiece of this effort"
"Indirectly, the [team's] work and its impact finally (after many years), pushed me over the line to hire a communications director for ACORN... to build a larger, stronger, and more powerful organization"
"This story map served as an equalizer for the organization's information that does not just highlight the United Kingdom and Canada. It is helpful to have [the project] as an existing framework to plug new information into for years to come. It is also nice to be able to share this on our site because it feels more equitable and like a better representation of our chapters. It definitely feels like it fits into our values!"
