The UCR-City of Hope Summer Cancer Research Scholars program is an immersive summer research experience that is open to UCR School of Medicine MS1 students. Over the summer, you will spend eight weeks working with on cutting-edge projects with cancer researchers at the world-renowned City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, California.
Eligibility
All applicants must be in good academic and professional standing as determined by Student Affairs Administration. Students with outstanding LACE requirements and remediating a block are not eligible. Applicants will be required to attend an orientation prior to the start of the program.
Applicants must complete City of Hope's onboarding process, and meet all required deadlines for onboarding and program preparation. Failure to meet onboarding requirements can result in dismissal from the program.

Please do not apply for positions you are not interested in, as this takes away from peers who have interest in a project.
If you are accepted for a project, please accept/decline within 48 hours so we can place a student from the waitlist into a position if you need to decline.

Compensation
All accepted applicants will be enrolled in MDCL 290 (1 unit) and receive a $3,000 stipend through Financial Aid. City of Hope will also provide an additional stipend to offset travel/living costs based on availability. The cost of the 1 unit fee will be paid for you by Student Affairs.
Requirements
The Cancer Research Scholars Program is an intensive experience, and program projects may require 40 hours per week of work. To receive credit for the summer unit, students must fulfill the following criteria:
Attendance
Attend a UCR SOM orientation prior to the start of the program
Attend any CoH onboarding or orientation events
Appear in person and/or virtually as directed by your project mentor
Attend any required laboratory or research meetings at the direction of your project mentor
Complete the full 8 weeks of the program
Deliverables
Complete deliverables as defined by the program and project mentor, including a final poster and other requirements
Ensure that their mentor completes the mentee evaluation form
Professionalism
Abide by all UCR SOM standards of professionalism, and ethics regardless of their site location

Selection Criteria
A total of nine students will be selected for this program. Students will be evaluated and matched with projects and mentors based on
a) students’ past experience and preparation for the project
b) alignment of the project and future career goals
c) personal motivations or connection to the project area
Dates
Onboarding must be completed by March 31st, 2025
Project dates run from June 9th, 2025- August 1st, 2025.
