Our beliefs about who we are and the communities we are a part of play a large role in shaping how we choose to engage in society. Within the LIBRE LAB we explore the contextual, cultural, and institutional factors that shape young people's identities from early adolescence to young adulthood. We are particularly interested in how young people are socialized to be change agents.Â
Our goal is to cultivate culturally affirming and consciousness-raising learning environments--at home, in schools, and in communities. We work with schools, community organizations, and families to empower young people to challenge and dismantle systems of oppression that cause them and their communities harm. Our methods reflect our commitment and beliefs that youth are experts of their own lived experiences and are invaluable in the fight for racial and social justice. Through this partnership, youth are active partners in building systems that support and affirm the well-being of themselves and their communities.
