APS Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance at UC Riverside
The UCR Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance (IDEA) team is a group of faculty, students, and administrators working to develop a roadmap for long-term, impactful growth towards equity in physics at UCR.
Our goal is to establish a set of shared values that guide our department's growth towards equity. Attached is our vision for value-driven goals and efforts for the 2022-23 year.
We are a part of the broader American Physical Society IDEA network whose mission is to empower and support physics organizations to enact strategies to improving equity, diversity, and inclusion. It will do so by establishing a community of transformation.
Learn more about APS IDEA and the IDEA Logic Model. IDEA is supported by APS Innovation Fund, AIP Diversity Action Fund, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Burroughs Wellcome Fund, and private donations.
Our IDEA team is separate from our department's climate committee (previously graduate diversity committee) and its women in physics committee, though our membership intersects both groups.
As part of APS IDEA, our group interfaces with the entire network twice a year at APS IDEA workshops and monthly with a group of peer institutions as part of an Online Learning Community. These meetings share strategies and give a framework for thinking about institutional change.
Because this is a pilot effort in parallel with existing equity work, we are organized with a core leadership team of one faculty member and two graduate students who focus primarily on UCR IDEA initiatives. The members at large are participate as fully as possible, but their core responsibilities are as an advisory group that stays informed and gives feedback representative of the different slices of our community.
