Head Coach Track & Cross Country

Coach Spencer started running at age 7 and ran his first 10K (6.2 miles) at age 8. He ran about 100 road races before High School and ran Cross Country & Track in High School but got burned out by the time he was a senior and didn't run Track his senior year. He was literally the first person on the Parkwood High School Cross Country team and recruited his friends to make a team. After 9th grade, he changed schools and ran for Charlotte Latin. Coach Spencer graduated from UNC-Greensboro and got back into running a little after college. He ran his first marathon in 2000 & finished his first full Ironman race in 2001. In 2006, he started running ultramarathons of distances of 31 to over 100 miles. Though he's known to go out and run 3, 4, 12 hours at a time today, most of his motivation for running these days is just to see the beauty of nature out on the trail. Coach Spencer first started coaching Cross Country & Track at Asheboro High School in 2001, moved to Glenn High School in 2003, and eventually to Weddington in 2007, where he's been ever since. Along the way, he's had the opportunity to coach 10 State Champion teams, several individual and relay State Champions, 10 All-Americans & 1 Gatorade Athlete of the Year, but he would tell you his most valuable contribution to the team is his expert bus driving.

Outside of coaching, teaching & running, Coach Spencer spends his time with his family, looking for birds, skateboarding, hiking, kayaking, traveling, gardening & catching up on sleep.
