Good Afternoon,
I hope that everyone had a great week. Below are the updates for the following week.
Reading: In reading, we are continuing our “becoming avid readers” unit. We have switched from looking at fiction books to nonfiction books. We are identifying the main topic of a nonfiction book and then finding supporting details. We are also studying the picture closely to see what we can learn from the picture and how the picture and words connect. Next week, we are going to start comparing and contrasting information on the same topic in more than one book.
Math: In math, we are decomposing numbers to 10 and students will use addition to find all the partners of 10 (ex. 9 & 1, 8 & 2, 7 & 3, etc.). Understanding the partnerships that make 10 will help strengthen their number sense and mathematical fluency for years to come. We will begin our end of third 9 weeks assessment in a few weeks.
Writing: In writing this week, we are continuing to write small moment stories about ourselves. We are looking at other popular authors and studying what they do, then trying some of their tricks in our own writing. We are doing things like adding speech bubbles, showing feelings in our illustrations, making sure our stories have a beginning, middle, end, etc. Next week we are going to work on publishing our writing. We are going to check to make sure that it is easy to read and that it makes sense.
Science/Social Studies: In social studies, we are working on our economics units. We have learned the difference between needs and wants. We have learned that people get paid to do their job and it is important to spend the money we earn on needs before wants. We are also learning the difference between goods and services and what it means to spend money versus saving money. Next week, each class is going to be making items for a bunny sale we will have as a grade level. Your child will get paid based on his/her behavior and work ethics. The items we make throughout the week will be on sale for your child to purchase with the money they earn.
PTA Notes: If you have not done so please link your Harris Teeter VIC card to our school. You can go to the service desk for assistance. Your card can be simultaneously linked to multiple schools.
