It will be considered a violation of the academic honesty policy for this course if you violate any aspect of the UCM guidelines; use internet translation services**, present ideas about assigned works from any source (including the internet) without proper citation, and/or receive help from another person without acknowledging their specific contribution. DO Rely on non-translator resources or on me for help, rather than as a native speaker to read what you have written.

**Further notes on translation software:

Both online and paper dictionaries are permitted resources that allow you to look up one word at a time and receive an entry that gives you the grammatical function, pronunciation, and a list of English or Spanish equivalent(s) of the word you have looked up.

Translation programs and online translators are not allowed. Since these programs allow you to input whole phrases, sentences, or paragraphs, the software is doing the work that you should be doing. In contrast to a dictionary, you do not receive list of possible equivalents (see wordreference.com for examples); rather the translator decides for you what words and grammar to use, often without regard to context. Use of online translation software is detectable and is considered ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT.

If you are looking for the equivalent of an expression like “on the contrary”, choose a key word from the phrase—in this case, “contrary”—and look that word up in the dictionary.

Verbs: Dictionaries provide the infinitive form of a verb. Translation software will provide the conjugated form of a verb. It is important for you to learn to correctly conjugate verbs yourself. Example, you want to say, “John sold his bike.” You do not know how to say, “to sell”. You should look up the verb (vender) and then figure out how to conjugate it yourself (vendió).
