The easiest and fastest way to do this is to make an appointment with the Orange County Department of Education.* Call to make an appointment and find out what documents you need to bring with you.
Website: https://ocde.us/Credentials/Pages/SubstituteTeaching.aspx
Phone: 714-966-4306
Address: Orange County Department of Education 200 Kalmus Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626
What to Bring:
Transcripts verifying completion of undergraduate degree
Proof that you have passed the CBEST**
$54.00 cash or check (no credit cards) for fingerprinting (amount may vary)
Form: https://www.ctc.ca.gov/docs/default-source/leaflets/cl505p.pdf?sfvrsn=c6f0a57_0
When you have been given your placement information, your next step is to apply for a substitute teacher position through the district. One nice benefit is you have the potential to make up the $54 by subbing one day, then make a little extra money after that.
*You do not need to go through the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) to obtain this substitute teaching permit. Contact your county office of education or you may apply directly through the CTC using the link above.
**CBEST or equivalent should apply. For those of you who used the ACT scores in place of the CBEST, ACT no longer sends out official score reports. A student called the OCDE and they said they will accept the printed page of the scores from the online ACT account.
