This program will support science teachers in foundational understanding about and implementation of the NGSS. Teachers will develop an understanding of how students learn to deconstruct the NGSS. They will also center instruction around sense-making to align to the next-gen science standards. Teachers will also leverage the NGSS to support every student as equity centered educators. Teachers are eligible to purchase 2 quarter units upon completion of the program through UCI Division of Continuing Education.
This program is grant-funded for CalTeach and MAT students. If you are outside of UCI, please visit their website for pricing and other program offerings.

Our four-part workshop will explore individual identities, model building antiracist classroom communities, provide strategies, and guide you as you prepare for the upcoming school year. Join us as we begin our antiracism journey with reflection and exploration of our individual identities and community. You’ll leave this session with a deeper understanding of your identity and empower your antiracist journey. We will then continue exploring our individual identities by exploring our community and answering these two questions: “How do I see myself?” and “How do others see me?” Together we will model, guide, and provide strategies for creating a classroom that will be a place in which all students feel welcomed and find a place of belonging. We will support you as you brainstorm how to create your own classroom community by offering office hours during one of the 4 sessions, catering the support to your individual needs.

COVID and racialized injustice have amplified the collective, cascading trauma experienced by students, their communities, and school staff. In this workshop we will first identify forms of trauma, center the role of relationality in addressing its manifestation at school, show how to create healthy classroom environments, and develop skills to assist staff in regulating their nervous systems and co-regulating those of the children they serve.

Join a collaborative group of teachers in planning your progressive grading or ungrading classroom systems for next year. Johanna and Doron have both gone gradeless in secondary science and higher education classrooms. We will guide you through ways to reduce oppressive grading and give you time to (re)construct your philosophy and syllabi. Peers and facilitators will work in collaboration: providing feedback, support, and guidance as you build a plan to center learning and de-center grades.
Johanna began as a traditional grader, using points to track student work and removing points for behaviors like late work. She started her progressive grading journey in STEM by switching to standards-based grading and then quickly changed to a mastery-based system. After much reflection on the positives of those changes, she finally decided to do away with grading work all-together, hoping to free her students from "the game of school."
This is pushing students to deeper learning, and greater ownership of their understanding. She used to believe that "ungrading" couldn't be done in STEM and that only magical unicorn teachers could pull it off. She's here from the other side to tell you that students will be MORE motivated to learn without grades! This workshop is available to help you change the grading practices of your classroom in a way that align with district requirements and your pedagogical beliefs all with non-judgmental community working to make learning the goal for all students.
Facilitator: Johanna Brown
Dates: June 21, 23, 28, 30 (T, Th, T, Th)

This workshop is designed for educators who have been engaging in ungrading practices in their classroom settings and are looking for a community of others to discuss challenges along their journey. Four emerging challenges will be discussed, dedication one session per topic.
Session 1: Setting up expectation, using contract grading
Session 2: Providing meaningful feedback and conferencing
Session 3: Maintaining student motivation in the ungraded classroom
Session 4: Getting support from others (teachers/administrators) in ungrading
If you are curious about ungrading is and would like to learn about what it means to de-center grades in your classroom, it is highly recommended that you attend Johanna's session listed above before attending this workshop. This will provide you with the context for participating in Ungrading: Refining Our Practices.
