Themes: Youth; generational healing; resistance; resilience
The 53rd Chicano Park Day celebration was the first one held in person since 2019. Artist Jessica Petrikowski, a Chicano Park Steering Committee member, was the third female poster creator for the annual celebration. The theme of the year was "kindling the new fire," which was significant for several reasons. On the one hand, it represents a recurring theme of youth and passing on tradition. On the other, it signified a new era to for the park, with a celebration coming back as strong as ever after being virtual for two years.
This Union Tribune article celebrated the first in-person celebration in two year. Dr Alberto Pulido explains the cultural significance to the 53rd year of the park's establishment.
