This project was a collaboration with the instructors at the Carpenter's Boat Shop, and each illustration is based on live demonstrations of boat building techniques in the classroom and incorporates years of accumulated source material in the form of annotations and diagrams from previous student manuals. Given that so much of the process of building this historic boat, and the development of the design of the boat itself, relies on local knowledge of the rocky Maine Coastline of Monhegan Island, of the particular and shifting details of wood grain and type, of the history of the lobstering industry and the demands of the trade, and of particular measurements passed down on particular materials such as a bevel boards, coffee cans, handsbreaths, etc. we decided on a hand writing style that is not "definitive" but suggestive, and on a manual formatting that can shift and breathe and be re-written and annotated again for years to come.Â
