Product Questions

What are SeaNails?

SeaNails are the world's first all-natural, biodegradable, waste-based fake nail products made From the Sea, for the Earth.

Will SeaNails damage my nails?

No. Unlike acrylic or Gel-X nails, SeaNails requires little to no filing down of the nail bed. In fact, the biobased glue we developed is naturally high in collagen which is essential for strong healthy nails!

Do SeaNails smell like fish?

No. In fact, they’re almost entirely odorless!

Can SeaNails be reshaped?

Yes! SeaNails can be reshaped with standard nail clippers and filed down with a household nail file without fear of inhaling toxic chemicals. Our nails can be shaped according to personal aesthetic preferences, specific needs for individuals with disabilities or unique nail shapes.

How do I dispose of SeaNails?

After wearing SeaNails, they can be simply tossed into your backyard garden! With the help of fungi, our product degrades in soil, while the fish scales act as an organic fertilizer, providing slow-release nitrogen for optimal plant nourishment.

Manufacturing & Sourcing

What are SeaNails made of?

SeaNails are made of just a few ingredients; fish scales for the nail plate, aquatic byproducts for the collagen rich glue, shellac flakes from lac bugs plus a little bit of isopropyl alcohol and for the coating, and guanine crystals sourced from the waste liquid from salmon scale washing for the shimmer.

Where are your raw materials sourced from?

Our raw materials are mainly sourced from Northern California; in fact, 3 out of 5 of our raw materials, which are waste products from other industries, are all within a 30 minute drive from our homebase in Davis, CA. Our only non-locally sourced material are shellac flakes, used to make the water-resistant coating, which are imported from a lac bug farm in South East Asia.

Do SeaNails use mica or glitter for the shimmer?

No. SeaNails does not use any mica or glitter for the shimmer. We extract the guanine crystals from the waste liquid from salmon scale washing created by Aquaborne, the only fish leather producer in the US.

Is the manufacturing process of SeaNails energy-consuming?

Not at all. Our manufacturing process is free from complex procedures and harsh chemicals, setting us apart from traditional nail products; mechanical cutting, blending, centrifuging, dehydrating, energy & heat use, water use, isopropyl alcohol use, and transportation use are the only processes in our manufacturing process.

What waste products are produced by SeaNails?

SeaNails produces no harmful waste products. All 3 of our waste products are biodegradable; namely the processed remains of organic fish materials, the impurities of the guanine crystal water after extraction and the fish scale remains after mechanically shaping the nails.

Other Concerns

I have a fish or shellfish allergy. Can I still use SeaNails?

Since we have yet to test our product for allergens on a wider scale, we currently advise against the use of SeaNails of those with fish or shellfish allergies.

What happens if you accidentally ingest SeaNails?

Although technically edible, yet non-digestible, we advise against consuming SeaNails. All the ingredients in SeaNails are non-toxic so whether it be your child or pet who accidentally ingests SeaNails, it should pass right through the digestive tract with no problem.

Only a small amount of isopropyl alcohol is added to our coating which is not enough to be considered toxic or much less deadly.

Can I apply regular nail polish to SeaNails?

Yes! After a few wears of SeaNails, we encourage you to reuse our product in conjunction with your favorite vegan nail polishes on the market!
