Coming from a family who understood the importance of education, yet not having been through it themselves, I had to figure out how to navigate admissions essays, financial aid, course registration, mentorship, asking for letters of recommendation, funding grad school, etc. all on my own. I took out unnecessary student loans, figured out how to pay them back, worked two jobs while getting through my undergrad, dropped out, and eventually went back to finish. Being a first generation college student is hard. Sometimes it can feel really isolating. I went through this decades ago--yeah, it was that long ago--when there were even fewer resources out there to support students. But UC Davis is trying to help. Here are some great links that can help you find support, however you need it.
Register for EOP and get access to basic need hygiene items, retention advising, attend EOP programs, and attend the first gen college celebration.
Take some classes with other first gen students; there was even one about accumulating social capital!
Meet with other first gen students who are further along in their academic careers. Get advice, learn from their paths, ask questions that only they would "get."
