Social-emotional learning and inclusion in the EFL classroom: Introduction and practical applications

In this presentation, I will introduce social-emotional learning (SEL) as an inclusive practice in the EFL classroom. I will explain what SEL is and how it aligns with the 21st-century skills required in today’s global landscape. Additionally, I will introduce the concept of affective communicative competence. The session will conclude with practical considerations on how teachers can incorporate SEL into their practices, including examples of SEL activities that can be used in EFL classrooms. These strategies aim to enhance student engagement, inclusion, and overall language learning experiences.

Luis Javier Pentón Herrera, Ph.D., is the 2024 TESOL Teacher of the Year, awarded by the TESOL International Association and National Geographic Learning. He is a Professor (Profesor uczelni, in Polish) at Akademia Ekonomiczno-Humanistyczna w Warszawie (University of Economics and Human Sciences in Warsaw), Poland and Co-Editor of Tapestry: A Multimedia Journal for Teachers and English Learners. Further, he is a Fulbright and English Language Specialist with the U.S. Department of State. Previously, he served as the 38th President of Maryland TESOL from 2018 to 2019, and earned the rank of Sergeant while serving in the United States Marine Corps (USMC).

Generative AI Tools for Personalized and Inclusive EFL Learning Environments.
Abstract: Generative AI can enhance EFL through personalized exercises, conversational practice, writing assistance, story generation, real-time translation, pronunciation improvement, and gamified content. The presenter will provide detailed explanations and examples of AI tools like ChatGPT 4.o for both students and teachers. Emphasis will be made on how AI tools can create customized learning experiences that cater to individual student needs and foster inclusive educational environments where all learners feel valued and supported. The presenter will also address challenges and best practices for integrating AI into language education, ensuring that educators can maximize the benefits of these innovative tools.
Bio: Dr. Nellie Deutsch (Ed.D) has taught EFL in K-12 and higher education for over 40 years and has applied Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) since 1992. She offers free online professional development programs on emerging and innovative technologies through Integrating Technology - Moodle for Teachers website to educators worldwide. She combines learner autonomy and exploratory video peer-based learning with technology and mindfulness. Dr. Deutsch is the past chair of TESOL CALL-IS and faculty at the Immersive Technologies (IMT) MSc program on a Moodle learning environment at Democritus University of Thrace in Greece.

ABSTRACT
The rapid shift to virtual education during the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly reshaped the educational landscape, providing valuable insights into the strengths and limitations of online learning. This presentation explores a transformative approach to Blended Learning, integrating lessons learned from pandemic-driven virtual education to enhance traditional pedagogical practices. By examining key elements such as flexibility, student engagement, and the role of technology, we propose innovative strategies to create a more effective, inclusive, and personalized learning experience. Emphasizing the importance of balancing face-to-face instruction with digital tools, we highlight how educators can foster deeper learning, improve student outcomes, and build resilience in a post-pandemic educational world.

Gonzalo Fortun, English Language Programs Specialist at the US Embassy in Bolivia, was an English Teacher for 23 years at BNC Centro Boliviano Americano Sucre, Academic Coordinator for 8 until July 2014. He was also a translator and interpreter at his own company, GPTranslations.
Gonzalo holds a PhD in Educational Science and Research from UPEA and Valencia University, a Master's Degree in TESOL from Arizona State University, a Master's Degree in Higher Education Quality from UPEA, a Master’s degree in Education from CEPI USFX, a Higher Education Teaching Diploma from CEPI, USFX, an English and Quechua Bachelor’s Degree from USFX, a Teacher Training Certificate from the Education Bureau of the Department of State of the U.S., and several other specialty courses including ESP, Critical Thinking, Assessment in ELT, Advanced Writing, Gamification, and others.

AI Times for the Language Learner
This presentation focuses on introducing the basics of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and its integration in the EFL language classroom. It is crucial for both English teachers and learners to stay updated with this transformative tool. In this session, participants will first be familiarized with the features of AI. The speaker will then provide a variety of examples of how AI can be used in and out of the classroom. The speaker will also share her own experiences using AI, giving participants a clearer understanding of how this new tool can benefit the human/digital learner.
BIO
Monica Flores holds a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and Foreign Languages from UMSA and completed a Master’s degree in TESOL at School for International Training, Vermont USA, as a Fulbright scholar. In the past 18 years, she has taught Spanish in France as part of a French Embassy Program, EAP and Spanish in the United States, and presented at the most important TESOL events in Latin America and the United States. She has been recipient of five Teaching Awards granted by the most prestigious universities in Bolivia and she is the current head of the Language Center of UCB.
