Observing Engaging Teaching Methods in Action: A Reflection on Ms. Yen Trinh’s Classroom
Introduction
On October 4 and 5, 2024, I had the opportunity to observe two dynamic classes led by Ms. Yen Trinh, focusing on Grade 5 and Grade 6 students. These sessions showcased various teaching methods, innovative learning materials, and effective assessment strategies, offering insights into creating an engaging classroom environment.
Grade 5: Building Communication Skills through Descriptive Activities
The first day began with an interactive activity aimed at enhancing students' descriptive skills. Ms. Trinh selected a student to be described by peers, encouraging a respectful approach by asking them to use phrases like "a little bigger" instead of "fat." This approach not only fostered sensitivity among students but also made the activity fun and engaging.
The excitement ramped up as students competed for the chance to greet the observer, motivating them to participate actively. After this engaging exercise, students received notebooks to reflect on their learning.
Classroom Structure
The left side of the board featured subjects like Math, Vietnamese, and Science, while the right side displayed the names of top-performing students, promoting a culture of recognition and achievement. Ms. Trinh emphasized the importance of uniforms in school, reminding students about maintaining discipline, especially on the last day of the week.
As the class concluded, she summarized key learnings, called students forward to discuss their contributions, and provided constructive feedback. This method not only reinforced communication skills but also set clear expectations for future behavior.
Grade 6: Exploring Human Origin through Collaborative Learning
The following day, the Grade 6 class began with a multiple-choice review on the topic of human origin. Students had the opportunity to raise their hands and share their thoughts, creating an inclusive atmosphere. The lesson was structured around visual aids, encouraging students to analyze the evolution from apes to Homo sapiens.
In pairs, students researched information from their textbooks and wrote down key points, focusing on aspects like body features and brain volume. This collaborative approach fostered peer learning while ensuring individual accountability.
Engaging Discussions and Technology Integration
After the research activity, students presented their findings, which Ms. Trinh facilitated with thoughtful discussion. By engaging two students from each level to share their insights, she deepened the understanding of the topic and encouraged diverse perspectives.
Additionally, Ms. Trinh incorporated technology by creating a YouTube video summarizing the lesson. This innovative use of media not only reinforced the learning objectives but also provided a resource for students to revisit at home.
Assessment and Reflection
At the end of the second day, Ms. Trinh assigned homework that included specific guidelines for reflection on her teaching methods, learning materials, sources of technology, and assessment strategies used throughout the observations. This assignment encouraged students to critically analyze their learning experiences.
