Week Thirteen

Conducting Guided Peer Review

After the deadline for DRAFTS at the end of Week 12, I will make peer review assignments. If you turn in a draft on time as instructed, then I will include you on my list of peer review assignments, assigning each student writer two classmates' papers. You will peer review the two papers you've been assigned according to the instructions below and post your reviews as replies in the peer review discussion board from last week.

Peer review assignments will be posted via announcement in Blackboard by 5 pm CT on the Monday beginning Week Thirteen.

12.1 Discussion: CONTINUED - Peer Reviews due this week

For each paper you're assigned to review, complete peer review as follows:

Step 1: Read the paper thoughtfully and carefully. Make constructive, substantive comments and suggestions on the paper using the comments feature in the Google Doc.

  • Examples of "constructive, substantive comments and suggestions" include (but are not limited to):

    • thesis needs to better identify the main point/claim of the essay

    • thesis does not include claim and reasons

    • topic sentence needs to identify main point of this paragraph

    • paragraph needs one overall idea (or more specific evidence or more writer's analysis)

    • using repeating words, repeating ideas, repeating sentence structure

    • using vague language, slang or needed transitional language

    • proofreading marks related to punctuation, spelling, or grammar

    • sources need to be clearly identified

    • proper in-text format and/or works cited format needed

    • proper paper formatting needed

Step 2: Go back to the writer's initial post in the 12.1 discussion board in Blackboard and create a reply. In your reply, answer the following questions:

  1. What does the writer doe well in this assignment? (List one or more aspects, paying attention to thesis, audience, purpose, organization, and development).

  2. What part(s) of the paper were confusing? Why?

  3. What would you like to know more about the topic that can enhance the essay and that supports the thesis?

  4. What specific details do not work in the paper (e.g., don't support the thesis) or can be moved within the essay?

  5. Overall, what new information have you learned or how are you thinking differently after reviewing this paper?

Complete both of the steps above for each paper you are assigned to review. Your peer reviews must be complete by Sunday of Week Thirteen.

The rubric below will be used to grade your 12.1 peer reviews.
