Hayley Morrison joined the TSC community as a Research Affiliate in 2025, bringing her interests in inclusive physical education, teacher training, and professional development to future research at The Steadward Centre. Hayley describes her research as:
“challeng[ing] assumptions about disability, expand[ing] understanding about holistic physical education programs for all individuals, promot[ing] joyful movement experiences, and support[ing] ethical research and teaching practices for physical education. Specifically, I research in the areas of inclusion, professional development (PD), physical education and health education.”
We look forward to collaborating with Hayley on the professional development and training opportunities we have for KSR students and our volunteers! Learn more about Hayley's research interests here.
In TSC's role as a centre for teaching and learning, we are proud to work with practicum students in their professional development. This year, Brenna joined us as a practicum student for the Winter 2025 semester. Brenna began her undergraduate degree at Red Deer Polytechnic before transferring to the University of Alberta to complete her Kinesiology degree; majoring in Physical Activity and Health. Brenna shared her reflections on her experience learning and working at TSC:
What has been your favourite program to support or work that you've done at TSC?
My favourite program to support at TSC is the Sit to be Fit program. All the participants in this program made the environment friendly and fun! I had the opportunity to instruct my own class and everyone was supportive while I navigated this leadership role.
What is a stand out memory of your practicum experience?
My stand out memory from my practicum experience was instructing a Circuit Training class. I was able to design a workout for the participants that included cardio and resistance training. When I was facilitating it, it was a lot of fun to see my class come to life and see the participants enjoy the workout I had planned!
What has been a main learning from your experience?
I enjoyed learning about Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) by being involved with 'FES Revitalizations' during my practicum. I had the opportunity to shadow an APA consultant who taught me the logistics behind FES and gave me hands-on experience during the revitalizations. Increasing my knowledge about stimulation, electrode placement and resistance for the FES bike has grown my interest in this area.
What was a challenge you experienced in your practicum? How did you overcome it?
A challenge I faced was while revamping a workout program for an Adult PALS participant. An exercise that I chose for the participant turned out to be difficult for the individual when we tried it. To overcome this I facilitated different variations of the exercise and asked an APA consultant for some guidance. This allowed me to adapt my plan and create exercises that would be successful for the participant.
What would you tell students or volunteers looking to get involved at TSC?
The community at TSC is very welcoming, friendly and supportive! Remember, the participants are the experts so follow their lead!
On June 25th 2024, we celebrated The Steadward Centre community and Dr. Steadward’s legacy through a watch party of AMI’s Our Community Documentary featuring Dr. Steadward and TSC. This fabulous evening took place at The University of Alberta’s Myer Horowitz Theatre and was attended by current members of TSC, our alumni, volunteers, past and present staff, community members, and KSR staff and collaborators. The evening began with a red carpet reception followed by an opening and prayer by Chief Willie Littlechild leading into the film. After the documentary, a discussion panel of Dr. Steadward, Sherry Woitte (TSC Member and Friends of TSC board member), Isla Robblee (Steadward Bears para swimmer) Vanlee Robblee (parent of Isla), and Morgan Cathcart as MC for the evening. We would like to thank the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation for their support of this event and The Myer Horowtiz Theatre staff for their collaboration and support of an accessible event.
