We are involved in both Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) and Psychiatry residency programs at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Medical students and psychiatry residents can find the most up-to-date version of their lecture slides or presentation material in the respective sections of this website (Note: 2026 psychiatry residency lectures are not currently updated).
At this time, we have capacity to work with Psychiatry residents, medical students and graduate students enrolled at the University of Alberta. We are also open to collaborations with other researchers in our area of interest. The following are examples of potential research collaborations:
Participation in literature reviews related to the following topics: Traumatic stress or trauma-related disorders, personality disorders, suicidality, trauma or psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, interventional psychiatry.
Psychiatry residents may complete their residency research requirements through some of the following:
writing and editing a study protocol
writing or submitting applications to ethics (via ARISE) or for operational approval (via NACTRC)
creating data collection databases
data collection and analysis
writing and editing a research manuscript
submitting papers for publication
For qualitative studies, additional tasks may include:
conducting or sitting in on patient interviews
transcribing interviews
coding and analyzing qualitative data

Note re: credits: Authorship will generally be granted to those who participate through successful publication and depends on many factors, including the level of time and responsibility devoted to the project. Specific tasks, time requirements, and workload expectations are generally established before commencing any work on the project. Residents can also obtain research EPA's if requested.
We do not have capacity to act as primary graduate supervisor but are open to co-supervision on an aligned project, or acting as a member of a graduate student supervisory committee.
We are also happy to supervise graduate students taking PSYCH 603 (Graduate Student Reading course). University of Alberta psychiatry graduate students are provided with guidance and supervision as they select their research topic, review relevant literature, and write and submit a manuscript. Possible research topics include interventional psychiatry topics, trauma-informed care, adversity and resilience, traumatic stress disorders or symptoms, dissociation or dissociative disorders, trauma-focused treatments, borderline personality, suicidal ideation and/or self-harm, and psychedelic-assisted therapy.
From time to time, there is opportunity to work on specific projects, as funding allows.

Due to the very sensitive nature of trauma therapy, shadowing experiences for medical students are not available.
Opportunities exist for senior University of Alberat psychiatry residents to experience a longitudinal psychotherapy experience (one half day per week). This typically requires the resident to complete EMDR prior to starting the rotation. See psychiatry residents for details.
