Our Team

Responsibilities

President: 

Are responsible for overseeing the entire organization. They are the contact person with the University and handle group registration, events application and room booking.

Treasurer: 

Are responsible for the finance of the group. In particular, they handle volunteers' reimbursements as well as the cash for the coffee sale during previous years.

Internal Operations Leader: 

Are responsible for the overall organization of the group. They help prepare for the weekly sessions, manage internal committee members, organize evaluations and club events, oversee administrative work, and complete other tasks as needed. 

External Operations Leader: 

Are responsible for the marketing aspect of the organization. They maintain the SVCC website (post announcement/articles) and keep our social media platforms up to date. They also oversee and respond to email inquiries in a professional and prompt manner.

Lead Peer Mentor: 

Oversees the language sessions. They train and coordinate our peer mentors. They also conduct observations throughout the term and act as the main contact point for all language session volunteers. 

President: Fernanda

Fernanda is a third year student at the University of Alberta, double majoring in Psychology and Chemistry. She loves to learn new languages, try out new things and learn a new instrument every so often. She joined SVCC in 2018 to step out of her comfort zone and be more confident in sharing her language and culture with other people. She encourages more people to consider learning a new language since it can be very fun and a great way to make more friends.

External: Edwin  

Edwin is a third year design student at the university. He joined SVCC to gain experience in a leadership role where he could put his design and communication skills to use in a real life setting. He also joined because he enjoys meeting people from all over the world and connecting with others who are interested in improving or learning a new language. When he has free time, he enjoys discovering new music to listen to and watching kdramas. 

External: Kate 

Kate is a second year Faculty of Arts Major in Psychology & minor in Sociology undergraduate at the University of Alberta. She loves reading, eating delicious food, and making art in her free time. She enjoys learning about all parts of the brain and is also a volunteer at her local senior center where she works closely with dementia residents. She joined SVCC as a way to expand her knowledge in leadership and communications.

Treasurer: Leonidas 

Leonidas Koutsogiannis is a third year university student, majoring in accounting and minoring in economics. He joined SVCC for the opportunity to apply his skills in a real life setting, as well as to help the club with its multiculturalism goals. He is excited to work with the team and meet new people. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, hiking and playing/watching soccer.

Treasurer: Galvin  

Gavin is a first-year student in computing science. As an international student he is motivated and enthusiastic about helping people with language difficulties. "It is such an honour to join the club to get engaged in something that I am interested in." When he is not coding or studying, he enjoys spending his time in the swimming pool. He is also an avid movie watcher and enjoy relaxing with a good film :).

English LM: Ashley

Ashley is a current University of Alberta employee and holds a Communications degree with a journalism major from MacEwan and a TESL certificate from Norquest. She joined SVCC because she enjoys meeting new people and learning about their story. Her favourite part of SVCC is watching participants grow and become comfortable in their target language and creating safe spaces for them to do so. In her spare time, she enjoys learning new things, watching Netflix, and drinking iced lattes.

French LM: Alice

Alice is a second year university student, majoring in Linguistics and minoring in French at Campus St Jean. She joined SVCC to pursue her love of teaching and her passion for helping others communicate more comfortably in a new language. She is eager to make new connections and learn together with the team. Alice loves to read and discuss books with her book club, hitting the gym and attending and serving in church.

Korean LM: Charlene

Charlene Kim is a fourth year undergrad student in animal health. Sharing Korean culture and meeting new people are what fuels her. SVCC has led to many positive memories and great experiences for her. Charlene enjoys crocheting in her spare time, and playing video games.

Cantonese LM: Mahn

Mahn Hei Yu is a fourth-year university student, majoring in linguistics as an honours student and minoring in East Asian studies. He joined SVCC because he is passionate about helping the community in learning languages and using his knowledge of Cantonese and other teaching skills to help people who are interested in learning Cantonese. In his spare time, he enjoys watching movies and TV shows, listening to music, taking walks in parks, hiking, travelling to different cities and countries.

Mandarin LM: Da Hae

Da Hae (Dahae) is fourth-year university student, majoring in Anthropology and Economics. She joined SVCC because of her passion for language learning and wants to share that with others, as well as her love for helping and interacting with others. She looks forward to working with the team and making new connections. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, watching YouTube and learning new things.
