Dr. Martín Guardado, co-director, is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics. An applied and sociocultural linguist, he investigates language socialization and literacy practices in immigrant communities in Canada, with a particular focus on the development and maintenance of heritage languages. He also collaborates with Pipil Náhuat communities in El Salvador to reclaim their critically-endangered language that has fewer than 100 fluent elderly speakers remaining.
Dr. Yvonne Lam, co-director, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics with a joint appointment in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Her research examines the sociocultural factors that influence how multilingual speakers use their languages, with a focus on their language ideologies and their identities. She has worked with Indigenous speakers in Mexico and in British Columbia as well as with speakers of immigrant languages in Canada.
Dr. Ava Becker is an Assistant Professor of Language and Literacy Education in the Faculty of Education. Her research has focused on difficult cultural knowledge as a mediator of heritage language socialization in post-exile contexts. Her current areas of interest include trauma-informed pedagogy and the use of music in researching plurilingual speakers’ lived experiences of language.
