Sustain SU's Seed Library
What is a seed library?
A seed library is a community initiative that ‘lends’ seeds to members of its community in hopes of encouraging the annual growing, harvesting and sharing of seeds. It acts as a vessel for sharing knowledge, encouraging local biodiversity and creating a gardening/seed saving community!
What are the library's goals?
Reduce food insecurity: With the rising cost of living, we hope to give students the resources and knowledge they need to grow their own food.
Make gardening accessible: Sustain SU’s seed library hopes to target the student audience by providing seeds that can be grown in a variety of spaces and light conditions; from a shaded windowsill to a full backyard garden!
Increase seed saving and community: Through the Campus Community Garden, we will be hosting seed saving workshops and community events throughout the summer to connect our members both with nature and each other.
How can I use the library?
Select the seeds you want to try to grow - use our indication system on the seed envelopes to see if they’re compatible with your growing space. There is no limit to the number of seed packets you can take.
Using our available seeds and educational resources, grow your seeds at home!
Use our available resources to successfully harvest seeds from the plants you grew! As a lending library, we only survive if seeds are returned to us; we ask that you give seed saving a good try with the plants you grow from our seeds!
Dry and store your seeds properly using the help of our provided educational resources! Seeds are quick to get moldy and rotten unless stored in a cool dark place such as a sealed tupperware in a dark closet.
Return your seeds to the drop box at our seed library location on campus! Find more information on our 'Donate' tab!
