I have updated the translation exercise performed in 2011, to reflect more recent developments in the BCC, especially with respect to properties and relationships. These developments in BCC allowed much more precise rendering of many DDC entries. They also allowed the translation of a few entries that had previously not had an obvious translation.The source for the DDC entries is DDC 22.
This translation exercise serves a couple of key purposes. It is an inductive exercise which identifies terms that need to be handled by BCC. And it serves as a test of how well BCC can do so. In both respects the following can not be stressed too much: One of the core claims of BCC is that most works discuss how one or more things affect one or more others. This means that it should be straightforward to classify most works directly into BCC. The corollary is that DDC and other extant classifications struggle to classify works as if they were about one thing. In translating DDC into BCC we are thus attempting to translate mistranslations into more transparent classes.
It is generally recognized that in translating one classification into another one must translate not just terminology but also structure. Translating just the terminology will thus likely not fully capture the value of BCC. As noted above the synthetic approach of BCC, grounded in flat hierarchies of basic concepts, has many potential advantages.

Note: Cutter numbers are given in alphabetical form for convenience in what follows. xxx means haven’t fleshed out that class in detail yet; yyy means that subdivision is possible, often by Cutter numbers.
In addition to the translation of all DDC classes for the ranges covered below, I have also developed a DDC Thousands Translation Table which translates all three-digit DDC classes into BCC notation.

Translations are provided for the first entries in the 000 class of DDC, and then for 300 through 346.096. This is a work in progress.
