Student's Expectations

In this section, you will find points of discussion for the initial meeting with your preceptor. Taking extra time to prepare for your preceptorship can greatly enhance the learning experience.

  • Share your previous experiences that you have had in healthcare or in your career
  • Ask about further educational opportunities (shadowing, rounds, in-services, workshops)
  • How you would like to receive feedback, how they prefer to give feedback, how often you would like feedback
  • Discuss with your preceptor the types of patient population (i.e. diagnoses) as well as acuity, complexity, and nurse/patient ratio on your unit.
  • Who to contact in case you are sick/absent
  • Discuss possible goals for your learning plan
  • Patient assignment expectations
  • Preceptor alternates
  • Preceptor schedule (ensure 350 hours)
