Why is it such a long clerkship?
From experience, we have found that 8 weeks is the optimal duration of time for the internal medicine clerkship. We previously tried 6 weeks but found that many students were only just starting to be comfortable with internal medicine at this time point. The additional 2 weeks allows for consolidation of skills providing students with strong foundations in internal medicine and increases the likelihood of successful completion of the clerkship.
Can I do an ambulatory week?
The internal medicine clerkship is solely an inpatient clerkship. This provides students with the opportunity to follow patient journeys and gain experience with all aspects of patient's inpatient admission, from admission through to discharge. There will be opportunities in year 4 to gain ambulatory experience within internal medicine (either GIM or internal medicine subspecialties)
Can I request a site change?
The learning experiences are designed to meet the learning objectives in all of the sites. However, if you do wish to change sites, site request changes must be made at least 4 weeks prior to your scheduled start date. Requests received after this will not be considered.
