Biologists who have been marginalized in history

In 2021, Neil Haave implemented an assignment for the capstone course in the Augustana Biology major for which students needed to research a biologist who was marginalized. The assignment asked students to research the reasons why the biologist(s) was marginalized, how they were marginalized, and how they are significant to biology. The assignment was again completed by students in the class when it was taught by Anne McIntosh in 2022 and in subsequent years again by Neil Haave until he retired. Effective Winter 2026, the AUBIO 411 course has been updated to be called Advanced Topics in Biology and is taught by rotating members of the Biology faculty (Anne McIntosh, Ivy Schoepf, Sheryl Gares), but this assignment remains a part of the course.
