SPRING INTENSIVE COURSE
HOW TO APPLY
Cameron Jefferies <cameronj@ualberta.ca> Tue, Mar 1, 2022 at 11:06 AM
Dear 2Ls,
Course Announcement
As you may have heard, I offer a spring term Oceans Law & Policy course that involves a field trip to the Bamfield Marine
Sciences Centre ("BMSC") on the west coast of Vancouver Island. This year, COVID19 and health restrictions permitting,
the course is available to 10 2L students and will be held the last two weeks of May (May 16-27). During the first week I
assign a series of reading assignments and hold seminars that inform the second portion of the class, which will be held
at BMSC from May 23-27th.
I have attached a course description to this email.
Application Process
Applications are to be made to me, through email, by 3 PM on Friday March 18th. They should be emailed
to cameronj@ualberta.ca. Your application must include: (i) a 1-page personal statement explaining why you are
interested in participating in the class and what you hope to gain from the experience; and (ii) your unofficial law school
transcripts. I am happy to accept early applications. I will make selections by March 28th.
While there are no formal prerequisites for the class, preference will be assigned to those students that have completed
Public International Law, Environmental Law or another international law course or that otherwise have a relevant
background.
Oceans Law is a specialized topic in international law, and we jump right into dense material right away. This is not to
dissuade anyone; simply an attempt at full transparency.
Costs
Students will be required to fund their travel to and from Bamfield and will also be expected to cover costs of
accommodation and food while at the station. With respect to the latter, there are student accommodations and a
cafeteria at the Centre, which are very reasonably priced.
COVID19 + Uncertainties
Given ongoing uncertainties surrounding the pandemic and public health restrictions, there is the possibility that the
course will not be able to proceed if conditions change or if the Bamfield Marine Center changes its policy for field trips.
Thus, I ask that selected students NOT book any travel arrangements until they hear from me that it is going to proceed. I
am hoping to be in a position to make this final call 45 days before our field trip component.
As always, I remain available to field any questions you may have.
Best,
Cam
