Mental Health and the Law: Theory and Practice - FALL 2022 & WINTER 2023

Join us for an INFORMATION SESSION (in person) June 16th, 2022, 12:30pm-1:30pm in classroom 193

This is a full year course which blends theory and practice and is meant to provide students with foundational law in relation to civil and criminal mental health law and hands on experiences in Edmonton’s Mental Health Court (EMHC).

In this course students will:

- learn and discuss the basic legal rules and seminal jurisprudence that apply in both the civil and criminal mental health law contexts

- learn about mental disorders, therapeutic justice, trauma informed lawyering and much more

- Observe and tour community organizations and facilities such as the Edmonton Remand Centre and Alberta Review Board

- Shadow and work in EMHC under the supervision of Legal Aid Staff Duty Counsel

Acceptance into the course is through application process only and students selected must commit to being enrolled in both the fall and winter semester and be available to attend court at least 3 hours a week on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays beginning in October. There will be no class component in the winter semester.

APPLICATION DETAILS

Interested students are encouraged to attend the information session. Applications may be made to the attention of Professor Qureshi and Professor Cochard by submitting a curriculum vitae, law transcripts (unofficial is acceptable) and a letter of no more than 500 words, explaining why you are interested in an internship with the mental health court. Applications should be sent by e-mail to vicedeanoflaw@ualberta.ca with subject line “Mental Health Law Course”. The application deadline is July 3, 2022.
