Other (academic) collaborations

I am currently involved in two other collaborative projects (in addition to my long-term collaborative project on Arutani; see Arutani and Sapé documentation).

Nasal segments and nasal harmony in South American languages (led by Susan Lin and Lev Michael, UC Berkeley): This NSF-funded project seeks to enhance our understanding of nasal phenomena by investigating the phonetics and phonology of nasal and nasalized segments as well as nasalization processes in twelve lowland South American languages. I am contributing to the project by investigating the acoustic properties of the nasal allophones of the aspirated stops /pʰ/ and /tʰ/, namely [m̥] and [n̥], as well as those of [ɲ̥], the nasal allophone of the affricate /ts/ in Mako, and of nasal spread processes in Piaroa.

Acoustic phonetics of Kwak̓wala (with Emily Elfner [York University] and Patricia A. Shaw [UBC]): Working with Kwak̓wala speakers from Alert Bay, British Columbia, we have gathered a large corpus of words and short sentences in order to investigate the acoustic properties of Kwak̓wala segments. We are currently working on a first overall description of the inventory as part of an Illustrations of the IPA paper for JIPA.
