Our goal in this website is to highlight social, cultural, and inherent biases in science that led to the marginalization of Jane Colden while trying to give her the recognition she deserves.Â
Jane A. Colden was one of the first recognized female biologists and is considered to be America's first female botanist. She is known for her mastery and use of Linnaeus' classification system of binomial nomenclature and her descriptions and illustrations of over three hundred plants in the New York area.
Despite her contributions and recognition from Linnaeus himself, Colden did not receive acknowledgment from the scientific community as a whole and was overshadowed by her male colleagues.
Throughout her career, Jane was viewed as exceptionally gifted for a woman. Jane's gender would define her for her entire career and led to many of her contributions being unrecognized for decades after her passing. Jane's father, who had been in contact with Linnaeus, had suggested that he name one of his genera after Jane, a request which went on to be unfulfilled.
