As a female at the time, Jane was not exposed to the educational opportunities (learning Latin) a man had but instead was educated by both her mother with whom she spent much time in the garden, her father who introduced her to botany, and her scientific colleague's whos studies enabled further understanding of her research (Lineus Catogarizing systems) (Harrison 1995).
