South Campus
An extension of the ACTIVE-AURORA test beds, the ITS Lab is operating a Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) test bed at the U of A South Campus. The South Campus test bed is a controlled test site located on 118 St between 65 and 53 Ave, and on 60 Ave between 115a and 118 St in Edmonton, Alberta.
The South Campus test bed includes the following infrastructure:
Enhanced with cutting-edge 5G and multi-access edge computing (MEC) technology infrastructure sponsored by TELUS, the test bed provides a closed circuit in which to fully test and evaluate CAV technologies. The infrastructure includes a radio access network that supports 5G and an MEC node that can process data flows from the test bed.
The South Campus test bed connects to the University of Alberta’s 5G Living Lab, a private 5G network with a dedicated MEC node on which applications can be executed with extremely low latency compared to traditional cloud services.
The test bed is also equipped with 27 advanced traffic cameras with image recognition software and 12 roadside units (RSUs), including 9 Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) devices and 3 cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) devices.
