ACTIVE-AURORA is a state-of-the-art research facility and Canada’s first Connected Vehicle (CV) test bed network. This innovative infrastructure project provides facilities for cutting-edge learning opportunities and hands-on experience in CV applications, working towards improved safety, efficiency and sustainability.
The purpose of ACTIVE-AURORA is to:
1. Develop models, simulation methods and experimental techniques that allow CV technology solutions to be evaluated and assessed according to actual roadway environments;
2. Characterize the issues and factors that limit the performance of existing technologies;
3. Identify, demonstrate, adopt, commercialize and produce the best transportation and CV technology solutions; and
4. Support government agencies in establishing standards and protocols related to CV technology.
A joint initiative between Transport Canada, the University of Alberta (U of A) and the University of British Columbia (UBC), among other partners, ACTIVE refers to facilities in Edmonton, Alberta while AURORA refers to the facilities in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The AURORA test bed facilities are located on UBC campus and emphasize wireless communications and technology evaluation concerning freight security and efficiency.
The ACTIVE test bed facilities focus on data collection related to active transportation and demand management. The ACTIVE facilities currently include three test bed roadways equipped with CV technology, a high-tech lab facility at the U of A, and more recently, a Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) test bed at the U of A South Campus.
The three original on-road test beds are located on Anthony Henday Drive (Highway 216), 23 Avenue, and Whitemud Drive. These roadways are equipped with 42 Roadside Units (RSUs), which enable wireless communication between vehicles and with infrastructure such as traffic lights.
The lab includes a state-of-the-art traffic simulation platform, portable traffic data capturing equipment, and hardware traffic control units. The lab’s facility-based hardware and software provide sophisticated network access to all three test beds and serves as a virtual test bed in its own right. It is housed in the Natural Resources Engineering Facility on U of A North Campus.
