Since 2017, the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Alberta has collaborated with RWTH Aachen's Mechatronics in Mobile Propulsion (MMP) Teaching and Research Area. This partnership is part of a broader strategic alliance that facilitates student exchanges between Germany and Canada, fostering international research cooperation.
The collaboration began with Dr. David Gordon’s successful PhD dissertation, conducted on a test bench in Aachen, followed by his Mercator Fellowship. During this period, numerous students had the opportunity to contribute to joint research efforts at both institutions.
David Gordon has since returned to Edmonton as an assistant professor in mechanical engineering, working alongside Dr. Bob Koch to develop advanced control strategies for energy conversion systems.
As a result of this collaboration, highly motivated students can now undertake research internships or thesis projects lasting 3 to 6 months in the following areas:

Reinforcement & Deep Learning
Embedded (Learning-based) Predictive Control & State Estimation
(Hydrogen) Combustion Engines
Fuel Cell Systems
The University of Alberta hosts a wide range of experimental testing facilities for passenger and heavy-duty combustion engines. These facilities can run alternative and zero-carbon fuels, allowing researchers to validate advanced learning-based control algorithms in real-world applications.
