Advancing Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Technology
This project explores hydrogen dual-fuel technology to reduce carbon emissions in freight transportation by enabling the co-injection of hydrogen and diesel into existing internal combustion engines. In collaboration with a major engine manufacturer, researchers are testing a hydrogen delivery system and control software on a Class 8 diesel engine, aiming to optimize engine performance and reduce carbon intensity. The technology can be deployed on compatible diesel engines, allowing for cost-effective retrofitting. The initiative also includes the development of techno-economic assessments, business models, and commercialization strategies.Â
Funding
An NSERC Alliance grant in partnership with the City of Edmonton and Diesel Tech Industries supports the development of the dual hydrogen fuel engine. This funding aims to advance research in sustainable transportation solutions by exploring the viability, efficiency, and environmental impact of hydrogen-based dual-fuel systems. It will support technical research, prototype development, and real-world testing to ensure feasibility and performance in commercial applications.
Alberta Innovates has provided additional funding in collaboration with Diesel Tech Industries. This initiative focuses on advancing hydrogen-based technologies to reduce emissions in heavy-duty transportation. The funding will support key research activities, including fuel optimization, emissions testing, and integration with existing diesel engine platforms. This project will further the transition toward cleaner energy solutions.
