I am a graduate of the BScKin/ BEd program at the UofS and an HPE MEd graduate of 2022. Since graduating, I had the opportunity to start a journey on a new career path. I am now Faculty at the Northern Saskatchewan Indigenous Teacher Education Program, where I teach 100-300 level courses on Indigenous Studies, and Educational Curriculum and Pedagogy. When not teaching, I coach U14 club volleyball and I am on the PHE Sask. Board of Directors where I am currently the President. When I have "spare time" I am completing a McDowell Foundation-funded research project (that I started in Hayley and Doug's classes) examining how non-indigenous teachers navigate teaching Indigenous perspectives.

Becky Arthurs - Saskatoon, SK  - Class of 2024

I grew up in Ontario and then left for the west to pursue adventure (and schooling)!  Having lived in all the western provinces, I now call Saskatoon, SK home along with my four children and husband of twenty years.  We are a very active family who love adventure, challenge, and competition.  My life’s passion has resided in health and physical education, encouraging positive life change and empowerment.  I have a Bachelor of Human Kinetics, physical education from Trinity Western University (’03) and have more recently completed a Bachelor of Education from university of Saskatchewan (’17) and have been working full time since, starting in the elementary system and now in high school teaching P.E. and P.A.A..  When I am not teaching, coaching, or training, you will find me experimenting with plant-based fueling and flipping houses.  I feel privileged to be a part of this cohort and am looking forward to bringing new knowledge and insight to my teaching and volunteering.

Tyler Baier - Saskatoon, SK - Class of 2020

I am father of three busy boys and am married to my college sweetheart. I spend my spare time at the hockey rink, football field and baseball diamond chasing my boys. I love all sports and continue to play baseball and hockey, despite my badly broken down body!

Laina Barley - Airdre, AB - Class of 2022

Since graduating from the HPE cohort in 2022, I am working as an Elementary PE Specialist and Wellness Learning Leader at an amazing school with the Calgary Board of Education. I continue to read a lot for both professional and personal growth. If I am not at work, you will most likely find me at the rink watching one of my three boys playing hockey or lacrosse.

Kyle Beattie - Westlock, AB - Class of 2022

I was born and raised in Westlock, AB, and was fortunate enough to return to my hometown to teach Div 3 and 4 PE (as well as woodshop and some math 10).  I completed my undergrad degrees at Augustana campus and University of Alberta (2006). I am the proud father of 3 girls and spend a ton of time coaching various sports, and I play indoor/beach volleyball and slo-pitch. My family enjoys camping, hiking, and just about every other outdoor activity.  I've become really passionate about helping my students to find joy in movement and activity.  My PE staff has learned a lot in the past few years and I'm anxious to keep exploring the best ways to promote wellness in my community.

Lila Berg - Edmonton, AB  - Class of 2024

I was born and raised in Edmonton, AB as a proud Northsider (Castle Downs woop!). Growing up, I participated in many sports and activities including fastball, basketball and volleyball. I love being active outside with my partner and two kiddos, Mavis and Lars; they all keep me very busy! I completed my BPE/BEd at the University of Alberta in 2011 and began working as an elementary teacher shortly thereafter. Staying committed to my values and passion led me to my role as a consultant, supporting teachers in delivering Wellness topics.

Tessa Blazek - Edmonton, AB - Class of 2024

I am in my third year of teaching at Dr. Donald Massey School in Edmonton, Alberta. A few of my passions are creating art, running through the river valley, and most recently swimming! Fun fact: I would love to do a triathlon one day! Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature brings me so much joy, and I love it even more when I get to share the trail with the people most important to me. I absolutely love learning, laughing, and sharing ideas.

Matt Blewett - Winnipeg, MB - Class of 2022

My wife, daughter and I live in Winnipeg where I’ve lived my whole life except for a year I spent in Edmonton while my wife completed her Post-Doctoral Fellowship. I’ve been teaching Health and Physical Education as well as an assortment of other subjects in Winnipeg Elementary, Junior High and High Schools for over 20 years. For those of you unfamiliar with Manitoba, we are the Slurpee and Chlamydia capital of Canada. This reflects poorly on our Health and Physical Education curriculum, but I try not to take it personally.

Tory Boeckh - Toronto, ON - Class of 2020

I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario and a lover of sports and activity. I'm a Physical and Health Education teacher for grades JK-8 and Athletic Director and Co-curricular Coordinator at an independent school in Toronto. I've been teaching in Toronto for 5 years and coach hockey, soccer, basketball, cross-country, and track and field. I received my B.Ed. and B.A. from Queen’s University where I also played on the Varsity Women’s Hockey team. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy travelling, biking, and spending time with family and friends at my cottage in Haliburton, ON.

Laura Boudens - Calgary, AB - Class of 2020

I am originally from the Ottawa Valley where I grew up paddling whitewater and racing kayaks. I happily moved to Calgary two years ago for my current job as an Elementary Health and Physical Education specialist. I have previously lived and worked in Wuhan, China teaching high school HPE and Berlin, Germany teaching 1-6 HPE and absolutely loved teaching abroad. In my spare time, I need to be adventuring with outdoor pals! Mountain biking, skiing, kayaking, hiking and camping are recent highlights of living near the mountains.

Megan Brain - Edmonton, AB - Class of 2020

Currently working with Alberta Education as a curriculum consultant in Physical Education and Wellness. Although I didn't necessarily intend on writing a thesis dissertation as part of the MEd program, due to life circumstances (aka baby #3), things changed and that path to completion looked as if it was going to be the best option. Thanks to life, the HPE MEd cohort, and my amazing supervisor, Lauren Sulz, I was able to complete the life-changing process of defending my thesis dissertation in June, 2021. I’m not sure what’s next for this crazy mama (maybe a phD down the road), but I hope to continue learning, leading, teaching, and connecting with other amazing educators in the field of mental health and well-being.

David Brimacombe - Edmonton, AB - Class of 2024

I have been teaching with the Edmonton Public School Board for 15 years. I am currently teaching high school physical education and sports performance, but I have also taught various subjects in junior high school. In my free time, I love to be active - working out, playing tennis, chasing my three kids and trying to avoid stepping on Lego pieces strewn across the floor (great for agility training). Over the past few years, I have also attempted to improve how I eat to be a role model for both my students and kids - I am known (mocked) by colleagues at work as Sugarless Dave for my propensity to avoid the white stuff.

Nicholas Brown - Lac La Biche, AB - Class of 2020

My journey started in Owen Sound, Ontario. I relocated to complete my Undergraduate Degrees in Physical Health Education and Education at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario. I moved out to High Prairie, Alberta in 2014 and taught K-12 Physical Education at Sturgeon Lake School. I have since migrated North East to the town of Lac La Biche, Alberta teaching K-3 Physical Education. I enjoy all types of recreation and sport. I have been with the Edmonton Catholic School District for twelve years now. I have had the experiences of leading and running a Recreation Academy for many years, as well as, department head for both Physical Education and Math. I moved to Grande Prairie, AB where I was lucky enough to be able to teach Physical Education for 11 years! This year my fiancee and I moved to Edmonton where I now teach at Academy at King Edward. This school is a full strategies sight which has given me a unique look at how I approach teaching PE. All students at my school have learning disabilities and many have fine and gross motor learning disabilities as well. I have had to adapt and learn how to teach for each individual student's challenges at my new school. I am super passionate about my job and working with kids to inspire them to be active for life. Much to the shock of my staff, I don't have caffeine, I'm just naturally energetic! I love being outdoors and I take joy in running, biking, swimming, paddle boarding, hiking, fitness classes, yoga, and any workout that can get me sweating! I love being a role model for my students by being active and eating healthy.

Jordie Richardson - Edmonton, AB - Class of 2024

Well hello all! I am super excited, but nervous, to begin this new adventure. Luckily, I have a very close friend and coworker who has also been accepted into this cohort, so we can go through this crazy time together. I went to post secondary at Macewan and the University of Alberta, where I graduated with a degree in Secondary Education with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Physical Sciences. I started my teaching career in St. Albert, where I was born and raised, teaching summer school, and I now have the joy of teaching at an elementary school in Edmonton with some amazing sports programs. I currently teach grade 5 in the mornings and Physical Education in the sports academy for grades 3-6 in the afternoons. When I am not teaching you can find me golfing or on the boat in the summer, playing ringette, coaching and playing water polo during the winter months, or taking my two dogs on all the walks. I have two gorgeous pups Ronix and Neville, who are definitely of top importance to me. I am a very big Harry Potter fan/nerd, as you can maybe tell by the name of my Australian Shepherd, Neville. I completed my undergraduate and teaching degrees at the University of Toronto, and have spent the past 11 years teaching high school PE in the York Region District School Board. Whether it be through my roles as a Department Head, Athletic Director, Healthy Schools Champion, or Regional HPE Heads Committee chair, I'm always excited to chat about the impacts of QPE programming. Outside of work, Synchronized Skating is my passion and the ice is most definitely my happy place. I still find the time to skate at the adult level, but most recently I became a judge as well. I also love to attend live sporting events, and the Leafs, Raps, Jays, and Argos are (still) my favourite teams... so I hope no one holds that against me.

Justin Versteeg -  Hamilton, ON - Class of 2022

I am a husband to the most amazing woman I know and a father to 3 incredible boys (below the age of 5). I grew up in Alberta and attended Grant MacEwan University before completing my BPhEd & BEd at the University of Toronto. Being physically active has been a passion of mine since I was young and that has not changed. Whether it was competing at the national stage for cross country, winning OUA's in an 8 man rowing shell or protecting the goal at ACAC soccer finals the joy of movement and competition has always fueled me to use my God given talents to maximize opportunities given to me. I share that passion by teaching Grade 9-12 Physical Education and Health in Hamilton, Ontario, coaching various sports as much as possible, leading our schools outdoors club through backcountry hikes and various adventures, and with my family through hiking, camping, running, bikes, kayaking and walks. I am grateful and excited to continue my education and work with this Cohort as we continue to shape future generations physically, spiritually and mentally.

I fill all my non-teaching hours with coaching soccer, between our school programs, our provincial training programs, and at the University of Alberta as an assistant coach.
