Applying for RAP Funding
RAP Application Instructions
FY 2024 - 2025
Summary
Amii has established a committee, the Research Allocation Panel (RAP), to allocate funding resources to research projects. This committee follows a transparent and flexible process to receive research proposals from Amii Fellows or sponsored by Amii Fellows, evaluate these proposals, and make decisions on the allocation.
Getting Started
Review the Application Process and the Applicant Handbook.
Proposal Template
To write a RAP proposal, request a custom template from Bobby-Jo Miller. Included in the proposal template is a budget table which links your proposed budget with a master budget spreadsheet.
Proposal Submission
Official submission is done through this form. Bobby-Jo will grant the RAP committee editing access for your proposal once this is received. NOTE: If you are leading an Amii project awarded in the previous cycle, you must submit a report on progress and achievements to-date using the same mechanism, even if your project is not continuing.
Proposal Review
The Reviewer Handbook is intended for RAP Committee Members but is provided here for transparency.
Off Cycle Proposals
Requests >= $10,000
Off-cycle proposals >=$10,000 have an interactive proposal process. Please read the Amii RAP Process for details of the process and review criteria. See the Applicant Handbook for more targeted information. You may also wish to view the Reviewer’s Handbook.
NEW FOR OFF-CYCLE: To write a RAP proposal, request a custom template from Bobby-Jo Miller. Included in the proposal template is a budget table that links your proposed budget with a master budget spreadsheet.
Please carefully follow the italicized instructions in the proposal template.
Requests <=$10,000
Off-cycle requests <=$10,000 don't require a full proposal. Please submit your request here

Some Pretty Good TM Practices
Be careful when you cut and paste text from other documents. Use the Edit > Paste without formatting option or you will override the template formatting. This will make your document inconsistent and harder to read.
Your application should be self-contained and aimed at a reader who is an expert in an area of ML/AI, but not necessarily an expert in your sub-field. You can see a list of the current RAP committee members here.
After you submit your proposal, please remove your students' access. Being able to have candid conversations requires a level of trust that is easier to have amongst experienced researchers. Some of the interaction may involve candid conversations about involved students.
During the interactive period, please edit your proposals in suggestion mode or using the highlighter tool (in the tool bar beside Font Color) to mark your changes. Note that your reviewers cannot accept your suggestions, so any changes made in suggestion mode will need to be accepted by you (the author) by the end of the first round of review.
Remember that Reviewer 2 will not see your communication with Reviewer 1. Please incorporate changes to your document where needed to ensure Reviewer 2 benefits from that conversation.
Some questions asked by your RAP member don’t require a textual change to your proposal (unless they explicitly suggested something). Sometimes the question is just one of curiosity and a simple comment response is completely appropriate.
Don’t click “Resolve” on comments unless they were officially assigned to you. If you feel you addressed the concern or suggestion, just reply with the change, and let the RAP member click “Resolve” if they feel it indeed is resolved. Unresolved comments then suggest that there are still outstanding questions (or the RAP member hasn’t read your response yet).
