Dr. Ivana (Ivy) Schoepf - I am an Assistant Professor in Integrative Biology at the University of Alberta. I am a broadly-trained evolutionary biologist with a strong foundation in behavioural endocrinology. I research adaptive phenotypic plasticity in individuals experiencing environmental, parasitic, and anthropogenic challenges. My research is multi-disciplinary, tackling questions at the proximate and ultimate levels, using field experiments in natural populations.
Ava Kelly - is a 4th year Integrative Biology student at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus. Ava received aMazankowski Award and joined our lab in 2026 to study the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on hymenopteran communities. After graduating from the UofA, Ava plans to pursue a master program in conservation biology (photo courtesy of A Kelly).
Nmazule (Elizabeth) Nyenke-Wofuru - is a 4th year Integrative Biology student at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus. Nmazulereceived an Undergraduate Research Initiative award and joined our lab to student to study effects of anthropogenic disturbance and parasitism on tree swallow nestlings' health. After graduating from the UofA, Nmazule plans to pursue a dual MD/PhD program (photo courtesy of Shots by Jason - SBJ).
Lunais our 2 years old lab's lab. Sheis very shy, but plays an integral support role in the lab.

In 2026, Chloe Funnell conducted a directed studies student researching the effects of pack introductions on space use and behaviour of captive Arctic Wolves (Canius lupus) at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. This project was a collaboration between my lab at the University of Alberta and Dr. Jenna Congdon C.L.A.W lab at Concordia University of Edmonton. Chloe is currently applying for Veterinary Medicine (photo courtesy of C. Funnell).
In 2025, Regina Tenorio Sánchezjoined our lab as a MITACs student to study tree swallows' responses to crepuscular and nocturnal predators in natural and agricultural areas. She graduated later that year and is currently pursuing conservation work in Costa Rica and South Africa (photo courtesy of R. Tenorio Sánchez).
In 2025, Yue Wangjoined our lab as a CSC student to study the effects of the pet trade in birds. She is continuing her undergraduate degree in veterinary medicine at Jilin University, in China (photo courtesy of Y. Wang).
In 2024, Angélica Arreolajoined our lab as a MITACs student from the Universidad de las Américas Puebla in Mexico. Angélica's work focused on effects of habitat fragmentation and ectoparasite presence on tree swallow nestlings. Angélica plans to join a master program in zoonotic diseases next (photo courtesy of A. Arreola).
In 2023 and in 2024, Jocelyn Kublik joined our lab as a NSERC USRA from our Integrative Biology program here at the University of Alberta to study the effects of extreme weather events on invertebrate communities. Jocelyn is currently working as an educational interpreter at the U of A Botanic Garden, but will return to school in 2026 to join the primary care paramedic program (photo courtesy of J. Kublik).
In 2024, James Salyjoined our lab as a NSERC USRA from our Integrative Biology program here at the University of Alberta to look at the links between parasitism and personality in small mammals. In 2025, he developed this work into a directed study. In the Fall, James is joining Dalhousie University for a master in Architecture (photo courtesy of J. Saly).
In 2024, Michelle Turgeonjoined our lab as a summer intern for the Beaverhill Bird Observatory, collecting data on tree swallows. Michelle plans to pursue further education in conservation science or wildlife biology (photo courtesy of M. Turgeon).
In 2023, Kari White joined our lab as a NSERC USRA from our Integrative Biology program here at the University of Alberta to study the effects of habitat degradation on invertebrate communities. She continued this work in 2024, as a Mazankowski research assistant. Kari is currently taking a year off to explore, starting from visiting Colombia (photo courtesy of K. White).
In 2024, Shaylie Yujoined our lab as a UARE student from the National University of Singapore to study the effects of human activity on small mammals' personalities. In the Fall, Shaylie is joining the Erasmus Mundus master progran in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management at the Central European University in Austria (photo courtesy of S. Yu).
In 2023-2024, Jinxuan Cuiconducted a directed study looking at how migratory birds cope with habitat degradation. Jinxuanis currently pursuing a Master at Imperial College in the United Kingdom (photo courtesy of J. Cui).
In 2023-2024, Lucille Wangconducted a directed study looking at how migratory birds cope with extreme environmental challenges. Lucille is currently pursuing a Master at the University of Alberta (photo courtesy of L. Wang).
Yogi wasour 14.5 years old lab's lab. He played a crucial role in supervising and providing stress relief.
